Technorati Problems

February 4th, 2006 by Kaushal Sheth

Well it seems many are having problems with Technorati. If someone searches my blog at Technorait here they would find more than 200+ links. But it still shows 3 links from 2 sites making my blog rank very bad. This has been going on for more than 2-3 months now. I had written an email to them a month earlier but didn’t get any reply.

Can anyone tell me am I doing anything wrong ?.

The one thing I notice in your sidebar is that you do not have a Technorati link from claiming your blog at their site.

When you sign up for an account with Technorati, you will see a link to “claim a blog” and by doing so they give you a piece of code to place in your sidebar. Then, once you have placed it there, you use their “ping” link to let them know you’ve claimed it. Also, you may ping them after that with http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping in your WordPress “Options > Writing > Update Services” section.

Give that a try and I think it will fix the problem.

    All the best.

    Ooops! I missed something.

One thing I also noted is that the majority of the links seem to be coming directly from people using your themes. So, Technorati and others - I believe - call this the “WordPress effect” and don’t count those links. I think their justification for that is that people are not actually writing about you, but rather they have a link that is pre-embedded in their theme. The feeling is that it would skew the results.

But still, the link I gave you - where I was writing specifically writing about you and your site - does not seem to show up. So, that is puzzling to me.

@Robert I had already claimed my blog 3-4 months back. And regarding Wordpress effect I have seen many other blogs who also had their link pre-embedded in theme but it was counted as inbound link.

It could be that your domain name has been listed as a “Wordpress effect” candidate? Just a random guess. :)

I’ve been with Technorati about 4 months and I’ve noticed they don’t always update me. But recently they’ve been updating me about 10 minutes after I post something. And my links and ratings have increased dramatically. But when I started heavily posting about “Tammy NYP” they’ve deleted my Tags and now they won’t even list my blog. Although if you go to my site and hit the Technorati button “who links to me” you’ll see me listed. But when I try to reclaim the blog…even starting from scratch with a new account they say “Unclaimable blog” - whatever that may mean. And of course their “support” is absolutely useless. I’ve even had replies from Derek Gordon - the Marketing Director (who says, incidentally “love your blog”) who says he’ll get the Support guys to work on it and yet….nothing. Not very good service Technorati. And the word will get around. Even though we all think it’s a great concept. Unless I’m being hacked by Singaporeans or something. Oh yeah….a couple of times I’ve got to first base - put their “claim” code on my site…they check it…bounce it and when I go back to “Claim your blog” there’s someone elses URL - someone elses blog waiting to be claimed as one of mine???But it would help if they answered their Support enquiries promptly - not just a message from a robot saying they’re looking at it.

I fixed it by going to the top. I contacted David Sifry and he personally intervened but it seems they still have problems. Especially with French blogs (I’m based in Paris). I automatically Ping through my host (Squarespace) and then manually through Pingomatic and Technorati itself. And even then it’s not very reliable. C’est la vie.
